Chapter Ten

Corpses Don’t Lie

Stephen and Jim entered the building that housed the ME’s office. The walls were stark white, and the silence that filled the halls gave Stephen a bad feeling. He hated coming to this place. Winding through the narrow pathway that led to Carter’s office, they ran into the man.

“Agent St. George, Daniels. I have been expecting you. I was just headed down to start the paperwork for your newest corpse. You boys sure do know how to keep a man busy.” The man’s sense of humor always caught Stephen off guard.

“Just doing our part towards keeping you from the confines of boredom, Jack,” Daniels teased. They followed the middle-aged man through a door and down another maze of hallways. Entering the examination room, the sterile smell of death permeated the air. Fighting the urge to hurl, Stephen inched closer to the body in the middle of the room.

Stephanie Carmichael’s face was pale. She appeared to be sleeping, with only the slightest hint that she wouldn’t be waking from this slumber. The vaguest hint of purple spotted her lips and eyes, signs that the blood had pooled in those areas after death.

“Have you done anything with the body?”

“No, they instructed me that you wanted to examine it before I started. I assumed you were looking for foul play. Though there are no visible signs of trauma. Only the autopsy will tell for sure.”

“May we have a few minutes, Jack?” Again, Daniels used his first name.

“Only because it is you asking, Jim. I will go and grab a cup of coffee. I know nothing, and you were never in here alone.” He looked pointedly at the men and left. Jack Carter had known Jim Daniels since the latter was in high school. He had been friends with Jim’s father and had watched the young man grow into one of the best agents he had ever seen. As soon as the door closed behind the man, Stephen and Jim started searching the woman’s clothing.

“You check her bra, Jim. I will check the pockets.” Stephen gave him a sly look. “You are the breast man, after all.”

“I like nurses, but this is beyond me, man. I’ll check the pockets; you check her bra.” Jim didn’t wait for approval. Sticking his hand inside the woman’s pants pocket, he shook his head. There is nothing here. Any luck with the bra?”

Still fighting the urge to vomit, Stephen lifted the flimsy bra away from the nurse’s body. Under her left breast, stuck to the skin, was a piece of folded paper. “Here it is. Let’s get the hell out of here.” Finding Jack, they informed him of their suspicions that the cause of death was going to be a drug administered through the smallest of needles and that the needle was probably still embedded in the corpse, and then they took their leave. Winding back through the maze, they found their way outside. The fresh air was welcoming after the smell of the exam room.
